Mr Shiri Bhawan was born on 15 June 1942 in Visama, Nausori, Fiji. He was one of three children born to the late Mr Shyam Lal and Mrs Ram Dei. His brother, the Late Mr Ram Bhawan remained in Fiji and his sister Mrs Sarvati Bali now resides in Sydney.
In 1966 he married the late Mrs Saras Bhawan (nee Jokhan) from Suva. They had a daughter Sharita (Shelly) and son Sanjay, who now reside in Canada and New Zealand respectively.
Mr Shiri Bhawan was a well known and highly regarded school teacher in Fiji. He taught at Vunimono Arya School and later took up the position of Principal there for several years. During this time, he devoted his life to shaping the young minds of many, who to this day have very fond memories of him.
In 1996, he immigrated to New Zealand with his second wife Nirmala Wati and settled in Auckland. He continued with his teaching at Papatoetoe Intermediate School. He also undertook several voluntary teaching roles in Auckland including teaching Hindi to senior students at the Ram Krishna Mandir in Papatoetoe.
He eventually retired from teaching and enjoyed his retirement years playing golf, volunteering for community work and socialising with the senior citizens from the Fiji-Indian community.
He was a much loved and adored Dad to Shelly Naresh and Sanjay Bhawan, a wonderful father-in-law to Vernon Naresh and Sandhaya (Sandy) Bhawan, a loving Nana to Nigel and Alisha Naresh and an adorable Aaja to Mysha and Aryav Bhawan.
He was also very much loved by Pranita Prasad, Ron Sharma, son-in-law Sanjesh Prasad, daughter-in-law Reshmi Sharma and grandchildren Shaneel, Pooja, Shriya and Shinal Prasad, and Rianna, Alanna and Ethan Sharma.
Mr Shiri Bhawan will be remembered by many as a true gentleman who displayed great humility, integrity and wisdom.
