Daughter of Late Mr and Mrs Dhanush Dhari Rai of Natabua, Lautoka.
She married Mr. Sundar Lal, son of Late Mr and Mrs Hari Lal of Lalmatti,
Rakiraki, in 1970 and is survived by her husband, sons – Sanjay and Manoj, daughter-in-law, Laleshni, daughters Sangita and Praneeta and son-in laws Yogesh and Vinay.
She also leaves behind eight grandchildren. Maya was a passionate and keen gardener and loved to cook for those around her.
She was renown in Rakiraki for dressing women up in sarees and her cooking lessons at the Tanoa Rakiraki Hotel, where her husband was the manager.
A visit to her was not complete without a tour of the gardens. This extended to her looking after the gardens on two other offshore islands.
She spent most of her life in Fiji and moved to New Zealand in 2004 after her husband retired as the Manager of Tanoa Rakiraki Hotel.
Her endless chatter brought so many people to her and this never changed.
